Two new initiatives on my radar in the repair and re-wear space.
Nike’s Re-Creation project upcycles deadstock and used clothing into new, lovingly crafted pieces where stains and holes are creatively transformed or carefully camouflaged (below). It’s not an entirely unique approach – lots of small start-ups have used this method – but the execution is more in line with my taste. For example I love these globular, fried egg-shaped patches on sweatshirts and sweatpants in contrasting or complementary colours (above).
Meanwhile, The Gentlewoman has a profile on Josephine Philips and her company Sojo, which makes the ‘last mile’ of repairs and alterations an easy win, not a pesky chore that gets put off forever. Inspired by her love for vintage fashion combined with the need to alter or repair her finds, it uses a network of local seamsters or tailoring businesses to pick-up-and-drop-off repairs via its Deliveroo-style app. (Read more here.)
Next, I’d like to see a company make visible darning desirable. Either offering the service widely (Toast offers it but only on its own brand items) or incorporating it prominently as a design feature to show the appeal of visible mending. Universe, do your thing!
